Circle announced on October 23 that its Gateway cross-chain balance service has added support for cirBTC, the company's wrapped Bitcoin token, and EURC, its euro-denominated stablecoin. The expansion gives developers a single interface for moving three distinct assets — USDC, cirBTC, and EURC — though each retains its own balance ledger and network footprint.
Asset Coverage Differs by Design
Gateway's route matrix is narrower for bitcoin than for euros. According to Circle's asset-support documentation, cirBTC is available on Arc and Ethereum only. EURC reaches further: Arc, Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, Solana, and World Chain. Availability of a token on a given chain does not automatically make that chain a Gateway route; the service defines its own supported combinations.
Depositing EURC grants access to EURC across its supported networks. It does not fund a cirBTC withdrawal or convert euros into dollars. Applications that need to switch underlying assets must still execute a separate exchange operation. That separation matters for businesses such as payments firms serving euro customers on multiple chains, which can now reduce the EURC they park in isolated silos without taking on unwanted currency exposure.
Speed Claim Starts After Finality
Circle advertises cross-chain access in under 500 milliseconds once a balance has been established. The clock starts only after a fresh deposit reaches finality on its source network — a distinction that changes the timing calculation for first-time users versus applications spending an existing balance. Deposits are held in noncustodial GatewayWallet escrow contracts; an authorized request then mints the same asset on a supported destination chain. A withdrawal path that bypasses Circle's API exists but carries a seven-day delay, separating control of funds from immediate access.
Nanopayments and Fee Waivers
The new assets also integrate with Circle's Nanopayments system, which batches off-chain payments for on-chain settlement. However, nanopayments involving assets other than USDC are limited to Ethereum Virtual Machine networks. EURC's Gateway availability on Solana does not imply EURC Nanopayments support there. Circle is waiving Gateway fees for cirBTC and EURC on Arc at launch, though developers must still account for deposit, withdrawal, and batch settlement costs across the full transaction path.
The practical test for prospective users remains concrete: whether the required asset, destination network, and payment method all appear in the supported combination. A unified interface simplifies implementation decisions, but the route matrix still determines what an application can deliver.
