Coinbase Secures CFTC Clearinghouse Approval
Coinbase has received CFTC authorization to run its own derivatives clearinghouse, a milestone the exchange's head of institutional policy, Ryan VanGrack, described as opening "many doors" for Bitcoin. The approval lets Coinbase clear Bitcoin futures and options without relying on third-party FCMs, cutting counterparty risk and operational friction for institutional clients.
SEC Custody Proposal Could Unlock Advisor Access
In parallel, the SEC's proposed custody rule overhaul would permit registered investment advisors to maintain direct Bitcoin custody for clients using qualified custodians — a shift from the current framework that effectively forces advisors into ETF wrappers. VanGrack framed the two paths as complementary: "both and, not either or." Direct ownership appeals to sovereign-wealth and pension funds that want on-chain control; ETFs serve allocators needing 1940 Act protections.
Tokenization Framed as Structural Upgrade
VanGrack called asset tokenization "the biggest upgrade since electronic trading," arguing it removes layers of Wall Street intermediaries — transfer agents, custodians, central securities depositories — by moving settlement onto shared ledgers. He cited Treasury bills and money-market funds as early candidates where instantaneous, programmable settlement slashes costs and fails.
Institutional Momentum Builds Post-Clarity Act
The House Financial Services Committee's recent Clarity Act vote has accelerated traditional-finance onboarding, according to VanGrack. Coinbase is now deploying digital-asset infrastructure — custody, staking, and trading APIs — to community banks that lack the balance sheet to build in-house. He warned, however, that Washington still needs to resolve stablecoin legislation and banking-access guidance before the pipeline fully opens.
