Ethereum Researchers Target Faster Finality
A new proposal dubbed “Decoupled Consensus” seeks to dramatically reduce transaction finality times on the Ethereum network. Currently, finality – the point at which a transaction is considered irreversible – takes approximately 16 minutes. Researchers aim to slash that to just four minutes, according to a draft filed this week.
Impact on Cross-Chain Transfers
Faster finality has direct implications for cross-chain applications and DeFi. The Ethereum Foundation estimates that reducing finality time could cut the capital currently locked in cross-chain transfers by as much as 75%. This is because less capital needs to be held in reserve while waiting for transaction confirmation.
Strengthening Security and Future-Proofing
The Decoupled Consensus proposal isn't solely focused on speed. It also aims to strengthen Ethereum’s defenses against blockchain reorganizations – attacks where malicious actors attempt to rewrite transaction history. Furthermore, the redesign is intended to prepare the network for the eventual arrival of quantum computers, which pose a theoretical threat to existing cryptographic algorithms. The proposal incorporates considerations for future quantum-resistant cryptography.
The proposal remains an incomplete draft, and further development and testing will be required before any changes are implemented on the mainnet.
