Investors Turn to Tokenized Shares for Niche Trades
The International Monetary Fund has confirmed that investors are actively using blockchain-based representations of equities, chiefly for fractional positions and after-hours execution where traditional venues are closed or cost-prohibitive. The finding appears in a new IMF staff paper published Friday, which notes that tokenized stocks have found a foothold despite the market's structural immaturity.
Liquidity and Legal Gaps Persist
While demand exists, the IMF stresses that secondary-market liquidity remains thin, price discovery is noisy, and settlement finality is not yet guaranteed across jurisdictions. Legal ownership rights for token holders are still ambiguous in many regimes, and existing clearing infrastructure has not been fully integrated with onchain rails. Those gaps, the fund argues, keep the segment volatile and illiquid compared with listed equity markets.
Settlement Systems Lag Behind
Traditional T+1 or T+2 settlement cycles clash with the near-instant finality that blockchain networks promise. The IMF points out that without harmonized regulatory treatment — especially around custody, investor protection, and cross-border recognition — tokenized equities cannot scale beyond niche use cases. The paper stops short of recommending specific policy actions but urges supervisors to close the gap between onchain innovation and offchain legal certainty.
Implications for Tokenization Roadmaps
For platforms building tokenized-asset infrastructure — whether on Ethereum, Avalanche, or permissioned chains — the IMF assessment is a reality check. Demand signals are real, but the plumbing required for institutional-grade adoption remains incomplete. Projects that solve custody, compliance, and interoperability with legacy CSDs will capture the next wave of tradfi allocation.
