MSCI to Implement Digital Asset Holding Restrictions
Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) is moving forward with a proposal that could exclude MicroStrategy (MSTR) from its global equity indexes. The index provider announced it will classify companies with substantial non-operating digital asset holdings as ineligible for inclusion in the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes.
The changes, initially proposed in August 2026, will be implemented as part of the November 2026 Index Review, effective November 30, 2026. While MicroStrategy won't be immediately removed, future evaluations could lead to its exclusion.
Impact on MicroStrategy and Institutional Investors
Exclusion from MSCI’s indexes could reduce institutional investment in MicroStrategy. The Nasdaq-listed stock (MSTR) serves as a proxy for Bitcoin exposure for some investors. MicroStrategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, shifted its focus in 2020 to acquiring and holding Bitcoin, and currently holds 848,250 BTC, valued at approximately $69.2 billion as of today’s prices.
MicroStrategy previously criticized the proposal as “misguided” and “flawed,” stating in August that “Bitcoin doesn’t need MSCI. Neither does Strategy.” Shares of MicroStrategy were down over 6% on Friday following the announcement.
