Schwab Expands Crypto Offerings
Charles Schwab has fully launched direct trading of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) to its retail investors. The brokerage, which manages $13.33 trillion in assets, confirmed the completion of the rollout during an Oct. 15 webcast.
CEO Rick Wurster revealed that crypto transfer capabilities are now operational for eligible investors. Schwab plans to expand its crypto offerings further, with the addition of three new cryptocurrencies planned before the end of the year. Specific details on which assets will be listed were not disclosed.
Wurster explicitly identified crypto trading as a potential new revenue stream for the firm. This marks a significant step for Schwab, which had previously been more cautious about direct crypto exposure, preferring to offer access through structured products. The move positions Schwab to compete more directly with other major brokerages like Robinhood and Coinbase.
The firm’s entry into direct crypto trading reflects growing institutional acceptance of digital assets. Schwab's scale and brand recognition could bring new investors into the crypto market.
