SIM Swap Scheme Results in Prison Sentence
Ajay Shinjin has been sentenced for his role in a SIM-swap fraud that resulted in the theft of approximately $265,000 in cryptocurrency. The attacks, which took place in November 2021, targeted customers of British Telecom (BT), allowing criminals to hijack their phone numbers.
How the Scheme Worked
Shinjin assisted criminals in gaining access to victims’ accounts by facilitating the transfer of their phone numbers to SIM cards under the fraudsters’ control. This allowed the perpetrators to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA) methods reliant on SMS messaging, a common security practice for crypto exchanges and other online services.
Luxury Spending with Stolen Funds
Following the successful SIM swaps, the stolen cryptocurrency was used to fund a lavish lifestyle. Reports indicate that Shinjin used a portion of the illicit gains to purchase gold grills and finance travel to Dubai. Law enforcement officials have not detailed the full extent of the spending or the recovery of the stolen funds.
Growing Threat of SIM Swapping
SIM-swapping remains a significant threat within the cryptocurrency community. The technique exploits vulnerabilities in mobile network operator security protocols and highlights the risks associated with relying solely on SMS-based 2FA. Users are increasingly encouraged to adopt more secure authentication methods, such as hardware security keys or authenticator apps.
